The Reading Goddess is here to help.

The teaching of reading is one of the most important and least understood jobs we have as teachers and/or parents. Every few years, it seems, another study comes out and "proves" the "best" way to teach reading. Teachers are often torn between whatever reading methodolgy their district endorses, whatever reading methodogy their college espoused and what they learn from their students. No one rewards them for researching the best practices and using them in their classrooms. School districts search for the one great philosophy or curriculum that will make every child a great reader. In a desperate attempt to force school success, states give more and more tests to younger and younger students. Parents worry about how to help their children become good readers (and pass those tests).

Often it feels like we're not all speaking the same language. Or that we don't have the same goals.

How Can The Reading Goddess Help?

I don't favor one program or another, necessarily. What I think is vital is that all of us involved in reading understand exactly what skills are needed for children to become great readers. While doing research for this site, I discovered a wealth of information on the web. Unfortunately, much of it was biased, overly academic, simplistic or just plain wrong. My goal is to create a place where people can find basic information that will help them make smart choices about teaching their children to read.
